Art Therapy
What is Art Therapy?
Art Therapy is an approach that uses art-making and psychotherapy as a way to support exploration, insight and healing. It is a non-judgmental and safe way to express inner feelings and experiences using creative materials (paint, pastels, markers, clay, items from nature, recycled goods).
You do not need to be an artist to be creative. For example, being creative is choosing how you dress and the music you listen to, as well as being drawn to certain images, sights, sounds and colours.
What to Expect
Session starts with a check-in and based on what is shared we will decide on an activity, which may be directive or spontaneous. A directive activity provides you with a theme/topic to work on and to express it in a visual way. This can be supportive when you are feeling stuck, overwhelmed or nervous to create/decide. Spontaneous art offers the opportunity to let-go and allows you to follow your instincts.
You have the opportunity to explore new materials and creative activities, which offers you the chance to step into the unfamiliar and to challenge your discomfort in a safe and supported way. Be prepared to shed all expectations and narratives of what you believe art-making to be.
